GNBS re-certifies the GPHC Medical Laboratory

The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) on Friday re-certified the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation’s (GPHC) Medical Laboratory after it successfully met the agency’s general requirements for operation.
Speaking at the signing and handing over ceremony, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the GPHC, Brigadier (ret’d) George Lewis, encouraged the staffers to maintain the standards of the corporation.
“The fact we are maintaining our standards, means that we are sending (the message) to the public and all the patients who visit us, that the Georgetown Laboratory is working and performing in compliance with the national standards,” Lewis opined.

He thanked the team of the lab technicians who worked “diligently” to ensure the best quality and service are offered to patients and encouraged them to continue working hard, “since there is no room for complacency.”
Head of Conformity Assessment at the GNBS, Rodlyn Semple, also urged the medical lab’s staff to strive for improvement continually in meeting the needs of its patients.
“We take this opportunity to push the organisation further in terms of accreditation and we want to encourage you to maintain the requirements of the standards. These requirements are in basically two areas – the management system and the technical,” Semple explained.
She believes once the two areas of requirements are properly implemented, the quality of standards in any organisation will be maintained.
GPHC Medical Laboratory Director, Dr. Pheona Mohamed-Rambarran, noted that the lab’s certificate expired in January 2018.
However, an audit was conducted on the facility in December 2017, during which it “performed well” with just one correction having to be made.
The GPHC medical lab is now certified to offer tests in the areas of Biochemistry, Immunology, Compatibility, Hematology and Microbiology.
