Promising young cricketers at the Under-19 level attending Secondary Schools and Technical Institutes across Berbice would be able to showcase their cricketing skills as the Berbice Cricket Board would be organising an Inter-Secondary School Under-19 Tournament. The Berbice Cricket Board with the support of Sueria Manufacturing CEO Frank Sanichara would be hosting the tournament after a long absence of schools cricket organised by the Berbice Cricket Board.
Newly elected President Hilbert Foster was overjoyed at securing the sponsorship from the Berbice born Sanichara and hailed the tournament as a red letter day for Berbice Cricket.
The main objectives of the Berbice Cricket Board, he stated in 2018 would be to make sure that all youths are given all the opportunities to fulfill their potential, to play cricket at all levels and to rekindle the love of the game among students.
The tournament would be officially launched in Mid March and is expected to bowl off in April. Schools are encouraged to get their teams ready for the tournament and the cut-off Date of Birth is on the 1st September, 1999. Players must be attending the school that they represent and must have an 85% attendance rate.
The following Region Six Schools would be involved in the Tournament – Line Path, Skeldon High, Tagore Memorial, Central Corentyne, Black Bush Polder, Manchester High, Winifred Gaskin Secondary, Corentyne Comprehensive, Port Mourant Secondary, J.C. Chandisingh Secondary, Lower Corentyne Secondary, Canje Secondary, Berbice High School, Vryman’s Erven Secondary, New Amsterdam Secondary, Berbice Educational Institute, Tutorial Academy, New Amsterdam Technical Institute and Upper Corentyne Technical Institute. The Region Five Schools would be Rosignol Secondary, No. 8 Secondary, Fort Wellington Secondary, Woodley Park Secondary, Bush Lot Secondary, Belladrum Secondary, Mahaicony Secondary, Bygeval Secondary and Mahaicony Technical Institute.
Matches would be played 30-Overs per side and the Cricket Board would delegate Coaches and Berbice Selectors to matches with the main aim of spotting talent for coaching sessions.
All of the schools are encouraged to host internal practice sessions with the objective to select the best available fourteen cricketers to play in the tournament. Each of the teams would also be required to walk along with either a Manager or Coach.
The Berbice Cricket Board in 2018 also intends to host a Cricket Tournament for Primary Schools. This Tournament would be played using either softball or Tapeball.
