(Kaieteur News) – Leader of the Opposition Azruddin Mohamed has demanded the immediate resignation of President Irfaan Ali following disclosures regarding the head of state’s ownership of a massive livestock farm and private estate at Long Creek, along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway.
The resignation demand coincides with a formal intervention by anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International Guyana (TI Guyana). The body issued a statement on Tuesday calling for an independent international probe into the multi-billion-dollar facility over potential conflicts of interest, personal enrichment, and breaches of public integrity.
Responding to the mounting criticism, President Ali stated in a statement shared on his Facebook page “As required by law, the president has made the appropriate declarations to the Integrity Commission. The acquisition of his assets and the source of the funds used to acquire them are capable of verification through the relevant financial and regulatory records.”
However, the mandate of the regulatory body is strictly circumscribed by the Integrity Commission Act, CAP 26:01. The legislation dictates a strict and continuing obligation of confidentiality in respect to the contents of all declarations received and any assessment undertaken by the commission. Consequently, this statutory secrecy legally shields the asset details from public view, blocking independent verification of the president’s financial and regulatory records.
In a public statement posted on Team Mohamed’s Facebook page on Sunday, the opposition leader estimated the current market value of the 150-acre private ranch at more than $5 billion, contrasting the sprawling development with the president’s official monthly salary of $3.7 million dollars. “President Irfaan Ali has confirmed his ownership of the luxury estate ranch, which is estimated to be worth more than $5 billion based on the current market value of land along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway while his presidential salary is $3.7 million dollars per month,” the opposition leader stated. “It is important to note that President Irfaan has been a public servant all his life. His luxury estate is located in Long Creek.”
The opposition leader further alleged that the estate was developed just three years after Ali took office in 2020 while 60 per cent of Guyanese live in poverty, warning that the head of state will go down in history and be remembered as Guyana’s most corrupt and selfish president, leaving a lasting mark of shame on his legacy. Mohamed specifically linked the controversy to legislative maneuvers in the National Assembly, claiming that the Former Presidents (Benefits and Other Facilities) Bill currently being pushed to pass in Parliament is designed for Guyanese to pay for unlimited electricity and water supply among other perks, structured specifically for Ali to maintain his sprawling ranch and live luxuriously after he leaves office.
According to his statement, the bill states unlimited electricity, water, technical staff, and the provision of motor vehicles owned and maintained by the state, which can be capitalised by President Irfaan Ali to request vehicles to manage his ranch. Mohamed further alleged that the bill provides full-time security for his sprawling estate and clerical staff where Guyanese taxpayer dollars will be used to pay for the staff to run his business, ensuring the enterprise is funded off the backs of Guyanese.
Compounding the political pressure on the administration, Transparency International Guyana declared that it is “alarmed by recent reports indicating that President Mohamed Irfaan Ali owns a substantial livestock farm at Long Creek.” In its official release, the anti-corruption body noted that “these revelations raise urgent and serious questions about conflicts of interest, misuse of public resources, and violations of the Public Integrity Act.” The watchdog warned that “the allegations surrounding the Long Creek facility risk further eroding global confidence in Guyana’s governance and investment climate,” adding that “if left unaddressed, these matters will have long-term negative consequences for the nation’s reputation as a stable, transparent, and attractive investment destination.”
To ensure absolute impartiality and remove any perception of bias, the organisation has taken the extraordinary step of ceding control of the inquiry to external bodies.
“TI Guyana invites Transparency International member chapters and independent experts from other jurisdictions to lead and conduct the investigation,” the statement explained, noting that the local chapter “will serve strictly in a consultative and facilitative capacity, providing local context and logistical support while ceding investigative independence to external experts.”
The proposed independent probe is set to examine core pillars covering transparency, the use of state resources for personal enrichment, compliance with the Public Integrity Act, and the potential abuse of state privileges.
The transparency group reiterated its institutional commitment to public accountability and equal application of ethics standards for all public officials. Issuing a stern warning to executive leadership, the group declared that “the Government of Guyana must address these allegations with alacrity.” The body concluded that “continued obfuscation or attempts to gaslight the public will only deepen domestic mistrust and further damage Guyana’s international standing,” maintaining that “the evidence published to date is serious and demands full, transparent scrutiny.”
