GABA knockout tournament to bounce off Monday ‘Best of three’ final to decide winner

First and second division teams in the City will, from Monday, bounce back into action in the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Knock-Out tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
On the tournament’s opening day, Sonics and Plaisance Guardians U-23 units will collide from 18:30 hours, while in the night’s second double-header from 20:30 hours, Kobras’ second division team will do battle with Pacesetters.
According to the GABA, matches will be played Monday – Thursday, and the finals for the respective categories will be decided on a ‘best of three’ format.
“I think this is a good start to the year, taking into account it would give the players some time on the floor and get them in shape to challenge for a spot on the National team,” said the GABA’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Rawle Toney.
The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) announced the country’s participation at the June 22 – July 1 Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships in Paramaribo, Suriname, and Toney is of the view that players under the confines of the clubs affiliated with the GABA “should take this tournament serious.”
“I think they should look at it as a dress rehearsal for whatever the GABF has planned to use for selection. But also, this tournament is in keeping with the GABA’s mandate to have continuous play at all levels,” Toney said.
Georgetown’s leading club Colts will be joined by rivals Ravens, Pacesetters, Plaisance Guardians, Nets, the University of Guyana Trojans, Kobras, Eagles and Sonics in the First Division tier.
Kobras, Pacesetters, UG Trojans, Sonics, Eagles, Plaisance Guardians and Colts are set to contest the Division Two title, and in the U23 category, Sonics, Guardians, Kobras and UG Trojans will square off.
