Dear Editor,
I have been following the issue of the land in Bel Air Park and the actions at the City Council to take control of it with a view to repurpose it for residential use. My research of that particular stretch of land which is causing so much contention indicates that the land has been in that state for over 50 years.
It is very strange to me that no one in that community saw it fit to even approach the Mayor and City Council to clean up that land and to use it as a recreational facility.
However, Council’s action to clean up the land seems to have earned the ire of some very rich people living in that special community.
But, what is interesting is the fact that further east of that land is a fenced playground which appears to have not been used for the longest while. Its gates are locked and there are loads of earth and other things on the ground.
The question is why fight the authorities for a land that according to reports in the press belongs to the Council to make a playground when there is one already in the community that no one is using; unless there is another reason or motive behind the contention for the land in Bel Air Park.
I have been told by sources at City Hall that individual members of that and other communities have approached the Council in the past to purchase sections of the very land for residential purposes.
I understand that they were denied the opportunity to buy portions of the land to build houses. The other thing I have noticed is that the Councillors who are representing this issue appear to have an interest in not only the residents but in the land itself.
Perhaps, some of our rich citizens in Bel Air Park believe that the lowly poor City Council should not have access to such prime lands even though it belongs to the council.
