Why close the main thoroughfares during sittings of Parliament?

DEAR EDITOR,
I fail to understand the logic behind the closure of the main thoroughfares to vehicular traffic during sittings of Parliament. I am almost certain it could not be the distraction caused by tooting horns, since there are much more distractions caused by fellow MPs during parliamentary sessions.
Whatever the reason or reasons, a better way has to be found to mitigate the inconvenience caused to the travelling public. There are also the countless man hours lost as a result of being stuck in traffic.
I am sure that better can be done by the authorities in terms of the management of traffic around Parliament Buildings when parliament is in session, especially given the increasing volume of traffic.
The number of vehicles on the road has increased exponentially, but the main thoroughfares remain constant. It stands to reason that any disruption to the flow of traffic will result in severe congestion, especially at this time of the year.
There is always a better way of doing things. I urge the Traffic Department to come up with a strategy to ease the inconvenience experienced by commuters whenever Parliament is in session.
