A 27-year-old man who was shot by a security guard after snatching a cellular phone, was yesterday sentenced to 56 months’ imprisonment.
Junior Allen, who told the court that he was sentenced before on a break and entry charge, appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. He pleaded guilty to the charge which read that on December 8 at Waterloo Street, Georgetown, he
robbed Esther Vanfield of a cellular phone valued $30,000.
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield stated that on the day in question about 04:30 hrs, the victim who is a security guard was at work when the accused attempted to snatch the phone.
The court heard that the woman resisted and the accused dealt her several cuffs to her face and relieved her of her phone and made good his escape.
An alarm was then raised and a team of security guards gave chase after him.
The Prosecutor told the court that in the process the accused was shot and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was treated and sent away.
The Magistrate before coming to her ruling told the accused that she took into consideration the fact that the accused pleaded guilty in his first appearance and did not waste the court’s time.
The Magistrate added that she also has to take into consideration that a crime was committed. “Do not steal, you are sentenced to 56 months.”
