Two persons who were accused of attacking a vendor and chopping him in the head with a cutlass and cuffing him to the abdomen, were freed on a wounding charge on Tuesday, after the victim who was seen with several stitches refused to offer evidence against them.
Osmond Brummell, 31, of Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown and Jenel Walters, 20, a vendor, of Castello Housing Scheme, Georgetown appeared before Principal Magistrate, Judy Latchman both denied the charge which alleged that on September 18, at Cross and Hadfield Streets, Georgetown, they unlawfully and maliciously wounded Wesley Payne.
Initially, they were granted bail to the tune of $150,000 each. However, the charge against them was dismissed after Payne stood before the Magistrate and expressed his desire not to proceed with the matter. During his brief time in the witness box, Payne told Police Prosecutor, Shawn Gonsalves that he was not forced or threatened to make the decision and that it was of his own free will.
According to Payne, one of his attacker’s relatives was robbed and they suspected that he had information about who the robbers were and refused to speak.
Prosecutor, Shawn Gonsalves said that on the day in question, Payne was seated at his stand when he was approached by Brummell and Walters. An argument ensued between the parties, during which, Brummell whipped out a cutlass and dealt Payne a chop to the head. Walters then began cuffing the man to his abdomen.
