Dear Editor,
Kindly permit me a space in your paper to bring to light my plight and that of some of my co-workers. For a couple of years I have been employed by a company that provides janitorial, construction and other works with offices in three locations.
The problem I and a few others are facing is that money is being deducted from our salaries for NIS and P.A.Y.E but as of recent some of us realize that it is not being paid over to these places.
Checks made to these places show that our money taken out from our salaries is not being paid over. Sometimes apart from the work done at the regular places you are assigned to work if the company gets other jobs and you have to go there and you are not even paid or if you are a hefty amount is taken out and you are told that it’s for taxes.
Also our work hours are sometimes way over the 8 hours but we are not compensated fully for overtime worked. I work in an interior location where the company provides catering for a mining company and the conditions under which I and others work are harsh.
Prior to 2015, we as workers endured great injustice since the rights of the poor or working class were pushed aside. I am certain if many other employees come forward they can relate the horror of visiting GRA and even NIS and only to be told that they have not received any payments from us.
Calls placed to these agencies are futile since especially at NIS you are told you have to come in and lodge a complaint. How can that be done when your work site is so far away?
Also Minister Scott has been showing a lot of concern for female workers working the night security shifts but what is being done to protect us women who work so hard during the day and are not properly compensated for their labour and their future benefits are being stolen from them
I am therefore pleading with the relevant agencies (NIS, GRA and Ministry of Labour) to look into what’s happening with this group of companies since we are being exploited. Work all the years and then you can’t make a claim at NIS or even receive pension when the time comes.
Fed up employee
