Deportation for chocolate-stealing Guyanese in Barbados

Barbados (Barbados Today) – A 52-year-old Guyanese man who stole a chocolate, gave police a wrong name, and has been living here illegally for the past ten years, was handed over to immigration officials yesterday after admitting to a theft charge in a Bridgetown court.
William Harold King, who resided at Park Road, Chancery Lane, Christ Church, went into the Savings Plus Supermarket on Swan Street, The City, yesterday, and was seen by a security guard and cashier putting the $14.55 chocolate in his pocket.
When the police were called in, King, who was given a 47-day stay when he arrived in the country back in August 2007, presented himself as 49-year-old Orin Bourne.
Prosecutor Sergeant Cameron Gibbons said there was also no record of King ever having his status regularized.
Attorney Safiya Moore told Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant that since her client was in the country illegally, he was scared when faced with the possibility of arrest.

“He gave the wrong name and he apologizes to the police. He [also] apologizes to the court and the people of Barbados for his actions,” Moore said, adding that King had enough money in his possession at the time to pay for the item.
“This has caused some embarrassment [for King] at such a mature age of 52,” the lawyer added. She then made an application for no conviction to be recorded against her client, who previously had an unblemished record. That request was granted. However, King was still handed over to the relevant authorities.
