A new Board of Directors has been installed to run the affairs of the New Amsterdam Rotary Club (NARC) for the 2017-2018 year. The installation ceremony was held recently at the Rose Hall Estate Senior Staff Club, East Canje. The year will run from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018
The new president is businessman Ramroop Rajnauth Chief Executive Officer of Danzies Auto Sales and Fashion.
He takes over from CEO of the Greenidge Refrigeration Roger Greenidge, who is now the Immediate Past President.
The other members of the leadership team are president-elect Rafeek Kassim; vice president Ganesh Shivkumar; Secretary, Tajpaul Adjodhea; Treasurer, Rohan Marray; Director of Club Administration, Rajendra Rajkumar; Director of Service Projects, Robindra Sookraj; Director of Membership, Chris Hicks; Director of Foundation Services, Chandra Sohan; and Director of New Generation Service Nolan France.
The Sergeant-at-Arms is Dr. Narine Sooknanan while the Public Relations Officer is David Armogan.
Outgoing President Greenidge, who served for the year 2016-2017, thanked all those who supported him during his tenure. He reported that for him the one year is too short and reiterated his belief that Rotary’s mandate is to serve humanity.
He said that during the foregoing year, they were able to complete most of the annual events listed including a few special projects and signature project.
The signature project for the year according to Greenidge was the Rotary Public School Clean Water Initiative.
So far six schools have been completed. The pilot project was successfully completed at the Canje Secondary School in East Canje at a cost of over $700,000. That project came in for high praise from the residents of the community and those within the school population.
The NARC then received a pledge of support from the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints to do five similar projects at other schools from Nursery to Secondary. So far, more than 2000 students are benefitting from The NARC clean water, project. According to Greenidge, he would have loved to have more time to expand on the initiative, since there are pledges to do a further nine schools.
Annual events completed include a senior citizen outing; wheelchair distribution exercise, which was done in collaboration with Rotary Club of Stabroek: and the annual Rotary Youth leadership award scheme.
There was the World Understanding and Peace Dinner Anniversary celebration, donation of sports equipment to the Rose Hall Estate Committee Centre among others.
There were also a number of special projects including a two day medical outreach at Wiruni Berbice River which was done jointly with the Rotaractors, the Guyana Heart Institute and the Cancer Foundation. Over 900 pairs of soft shoes, petroleum jelly and Vaseline skin lotion among other items were given to residents.
New President Rajnauth thanked the members for showing faith in him and pledged to serve in the best interest of the body.
