A man who swallowed a total of 71 cocaine pellets was yesterday sentenced to four years imprisonment and fined $5.1M when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Thirty-five-year-old Eaion Kwesi Kaman Leblanc of 101 Ogle Street, Triumph, East Coast Demerara, pleaded guilty to the charge which read that between July 3 and July 4 at Woodlands Hospital he had in his possession 774 grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Sergeant Harris stated that on July 3, the accused was an outgoing passenger at Eugene F Correia International Airport, Ogle East Coast Demerara, on a flight to Barbados.
The court heard that the accused was observed by ranks of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) sweating profusely and acting in a suspicious manner.
The accused was taken to the hospital where an x-ray was conducted on him which revealed that he had in his abdominal cavity pellet-like objects.
The accused was then given medication which allowed him to excrete at total of 71 pellets. The prosecutor told the court that the pellets were examined and tested positive for cocaine.
The accused was discharged from the hospital on July 6 and taken to the CANU Headquarters where he was told of the offence and he admitted in a caution statement. He was then subsequently charged for the offence.
When given a chance to address the court, the accused stated “I am sorry for what happened.”
The magistrate said that based on the early guilty plea – at his first court appearance – she sentenced him to four years’ imprisonment.
