A 60-year-old woman from Queenstown, Essequibo Coast died Sunday, just two days after her husband was sentenced to two years in prison.
It is believed that upon hearing of her husband’s sentence, Geeta Dorwish suffered an instant relapse, family members said that the deceased had recently recovered from a surgery performed on her some two weeks ago.
The woman’s husband, Dennis Dorwish, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment last Friday for the possession of an unlicensed firearm with three live rounds. It was alleged by the court that on February 10, 2015 Dorwish had in his possession one unlicensed Pen Gun with three matching rounds.
The weapon was believed to have been stashed in Dorwish’s Awara Farm in Queenstown. Initially Dorwish pleaded not guilty to the charge. According to family members however, at some point in time Dorwish pleaded guilty to the charge stating that the pen gun was a gift from his brother-in-law.
Son of the deceased, Deon Dorwish, said that his mother had recovered well from the surgery she recently underwent. He further noted that his mother also suffered from Diabetes and Hypertension for quite some years. Deon said that at the time of her death, his mother was at her sister’s residence in Georgetown.
“I got a call from my aunt saying that mommy doesn’t like how she was feeling. At some point she passed out, they tried to call ambulance but she didn’t make it.” With tear-filled eyes Deon said that if he had one wish, it was that his father never picked up that Pen gun from his farm. Then he said his father would be out of prison and most importantly his mother would still be alive.
Family and friends of the Dorwishs said that Geeta and Dennis were inseparable. Neither could’ve imagined a life without the other. Geeta couldn’t bear the thought of spending the coming two years of her life without her husband by her side. She gave too much thought to those coming lonely years and thus suffered a relapse in her health, sadly to the point of death. Dennis on the other hand is currently unaware that his wife has died. His family is afraid of risking it since he also suffers from Diabetes and Hypertension.
Family members still blame the Magistrate, Sunil Scare since they believe his ruling was to the extreme. They believe that Scarce should’ve taken into consideration the man’s age along with his health issues.
“I believe that the magistrate should’ve put Dennis under house arrest, or at least let him pay a fine to the court. I don’t understand why a 61-year-old man should sit in prison for just the possession of a fire arm. Is not like he killed anyone with the gun.”
