She is considered to be one of the persons responsible for the elevated status
of Dominoes in this country.
Newly-elected President of the Guyana National Domino Federation (GNDF) Faye Joseph speaking with Kaieteur Sport Monday evening, at Dynasty Sports Bar in South Ruimveldt said she has great plans for the sport.
Joseph, who is also the Head of the Georgetown Domino Association (GDA), ever since her initial involvement in the sport four years ago has strenuously sought to move the previously dubbed leisure time game into a mainstream sport.
According to Joseph, who now wears two hats, her late husband, Orin Joseph displayed similar passion as her for the sport which was to transform the image of the activity from a pastime event to one that allowed persons from all walks of life to be part of a larger gathering.
“Previously Dominoes was restricted to bottom houses and at wakes or even by the roadside, but now we’ve been able to move it from that label and have it now positioned as a major sport in Guyana,” she told this newspaper.
She said at first her relation with the sport was just from a sponsorship standpoint, but that changed after her husband’s passing and as we know the rest is history.
Joseph has even moved the sport’s popularity and fortunes to unprecedented levels and is known to be one of the main architects of the International Tournament which was staged last month right here.
She has also been responsible for the national team participation in tournaments of a similar nature overseas, while the consistent staging of tournaments is another encouraging feature of her reign at the top.
Urged to identify any particular benefit (s) that stands out by playing Dominoes, Joseph pointed to the camaraderie that exists among clubs, the unity that it brings among the various ethnic groups and the financial rewards that is derived from the staging of competitions.
The soft-spoken executive also commands a lot of love and respect among her peers and is always willing to offer any assistance that might be sought from participants.
Many of the sport’s participants see her as a major pillar for the game, a testimony that is borne by the fact that she usually returns at the helm unopposed.
Among the plans she has for the year is to host and support regular tournaments and to ensure that Guyana send teams to fulfill all requests for overseas participation.
It is no secret that Joseph has made huge personal and financial sacrifices to get teams to overseas engagements and this act of goodwill she stated, will continue as long as she remains involved in the sport.
The reality of this pronouncement is that she intends to stay attached to the sport for years to come.
Meanwhile, Joseph disclosed that she will be hosting a two-day tournament for Mothers Day at her residence 1223 Gaulding Place, South Ruimveldt.
According to her it is an annual undertaking and she is urging all teams to come out and support the venture which is aimed at showing appreciation for Mothers.
The tournament will commence this Saturday and ends the following day, while Mothers who participate in the activity will receive tokens of appreciation.
Entrance fee is $12,000 per team.
