– unidentified cyclist also perishes in separate accident
By Brushell Blackman
A 53-year-old security guard heading home from work was killed, and three others injured at around 04.30hrs yesterday, during a two-bus collision near Le Resouvenir, East Coast Demerara.
Clive Hercules, 53, an employee of Beharry Group of Companies, was pinned for several minutes in the badly mangled vehicle, and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Three passengers from the two buses were also injured; the most seriously hurt being Winston Belgrave, 45, the driver of the Beharry-owned vehicle. He was admitted to the Woodlands Hospital. Police identified the other injured as Caleb Henry, 24, of Lusignan, Raphael Kemraj, 21 and Jagdeo Singh, 37, of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara. Singh and Henry were admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, (GPHC) while Kemraj was treated for minor injuries and discharged.
Police said that Hercules, of 1615 Bell West Canal Number two West Bank Demerara, was in the front passenger seat of minibus PTT 7715, owned by Beharry Group of Companies, and driven by Winston Belgrave, when the two mini buses collided head on.
The two armed security guards were travelling west along the southern side of the East Coast Demerara Highway in the vicinity of Le Resouvenir when Belgrave, the driver of the Beharry-owned bus, allegedly saw “an extremely bright light” coming in his direction.
The light that Belgrave saw was that of the mini bus BPP1340, which was being driven by Jagdeo Singh. Reports indicate that Belgrave swerved to avoid a collision, but the bus driven by Khemraj rammed his vehicle.
According to reports, while public spirited citizens came to the aid of the victims who were taken to the Georgetown and Woodlands Hospitals there was very little anyone could do to save Hercules.
He was pinned inside the bus as horrified onlookers tried desperately to free him. It was only after the Guyana Fire Service arrived on the scene sometime after that the man was freed from the wreckage, but by then he was already dead.
In another fatal accident on the Beterverwagting Public Road Saturday night, a pedal cyclist, so far unidentified, was killed after being struck by a car.
Reports indicate that the 25-year-old driver was proceeding east along the northern side of the public road when the cyclist suddenly rode into his path.
The driver took the badly injured cyclist to the GPHC, where he was pronounced dead.
