A labourer is now dead after a usual visit to the Port Mourant Backlands to check on
his employer’s cattle on Thursday.
Dead is Jhabal Lutchana, commonly known as ‘Japanese’, 58, of Lot 18 Williamsburg Village, Corentyne, Berbice, and a labourer attached to Kris Jagdeo at No. 1 Village. Lutchana left early on Thursday to tend to cattle in the backlands when he reportedly drowned.
He was reportedly found lying halfway in a trench at Port Mourant backlands on Thursday by some of his colleagues.
Relatives of the dead man suspect drowning but according to reports reaching this publication he was found bleeding from his nose and ears. There were no visible marks of violence on the body but a Post Mortem Examination is expected to be performed shortly.
Somwattie Lutchana, aka ‘Loreen’, a sister of the man, told Kaieteur News that her brother had worked with Kris Jagdeo for over 15 years but left three years ago and recently returned. She stated that it is unclear why he left but subsequently returned to the job.
She said that her brother left with his workmates for the Port Mourant backlands to tend to the cattle as he normally would. From the information she received his workmates left him and moved further into the backlands.
“Dem seh when dem come out back dem see he lying down dead in the corner of the small trench weh dem leff he.”
According to the sister her brother had no problems with anyone and never complained about his work hence they believe that he indeed drowned. He was described as a helpful person in the community. He leaves to mourn his two children, five siblings and other relatives and friends.
His body is currently at the Ramoo’s Funeral Parlour.
