Darval Green produced an attacking unbeaten half century as Jamaica lifted their fourth
consecutive Les Harris teachers T20 title with a 54-run win over Guyana in the final which was contested yesterday at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo.
Playing in his first match of the tournament after he arrived in Guyana on Thursday night, Green finished unbeaten on 88 as Jamaica posted 203-5, batting first.
Openers Gavaski Malachi and Kemar Cox made maximum use of the power play as they added 75 for the opening stand to give their team a solid start. The introduction of the tournament’s most economical bowler Andrew Williams pegged back the scoring somewhat and provided the host nation with the breakthrough. Williams whose first two overs yielded only six runs sent back Malachi 27 (5×4) before skipper Balram Samaroo bowled Cox for 42 (2×4,2×6) leaving the score at 89-2.
However, Green and Hermon Henry continued to attack as they added 52 for the fourth wicket
before Williams uprooted the stumps of Henry for 26 (2×4,2×6). But Green timed the ball well as he smashed seven fours and seven towering sixes to guide Jamaica to their eventual total. Samaroo finished with 2-32 and Williams 2-33.
Green made early inroads when he bowled skipper Samaroo for 13 as Guyana lost their first wicket with the score on 23. Wayne Osbourne was then caught off Dwight Stuart for nine before Darnell Douglas and Boodram Lalldass added 37 for the third wicket. Douglas, who smashed five fours and one six, was taken off Dwayne Ewart for 34, while Lalldass was removed by Carl Brissett for 15 as Guyana slipped to 84-4. The Jamaicans maintained a steady line and length to restrict the home team with only Festus Benn (22), Ajay Jailall (16) and Williams (12) of the remaining batsmen reaching double figures; Guyana were bowled out for 149 in 19.1 overs. Xavier Scott claimed 3-13 and Bressett 2-20.
Trinidad and Tobago took third place with 71-run win over The Bahamas. Batting first Trinidad and Tobago scored 153-5. Malcolm Ramlogan hit an unbeaten 58, while Chrysstom Lookhart made 38 not out. Lee Melville had 2-19. The Bahamas were bowled out for 82 in 19 overs in reply. J. Todd made 13, J. Dolphin 11, E. Saaroo 11 and C. Brown 10. Ramsahai Ramesar snared 3-17 and Dehaann Seeram 2-24.
