Feb 20, 2017 Letters
Dear Editor,
I write this letter with a heavy heart. I chose not to publish my name because some of my friends in the PPP would be annoyed and would say I should not have done so. I am a supporter of the PPP. I once had authority in one of our public sector organizations. The PPP Government has done masterfully with the small economy of Guyana. I am not going to deny we made mistakes. I think Mr. Jagdeo got it wrong badly many times.
I believe we would have won in 2011 and still be in power if we had let Ralph Ramkarran lead us in the 2011 elections There is a flurry of letters in the press calling for a third party to contest the elections. The names that crop up all the time are that of Freddie Kissoon as numero uno and Nigel Hughes. I suspect the people behind the third party formation want an Indian/African combination.
Let them go ahead. A third party getting into government will mean the destruction of both Freddie and Nigel Hughes. It is one thing to be a Don Quixote as people refer to Freddie; it is another thing to be in power ruling over a troublesome country like Guyana. People approve of Freddie because he appears to be the perfect multi-racial man with the perfect zeal for empowering the Guyanese poor.
I am a PPP supporter and won’t change from that but I will never deny the nationalism of Freddie Kissoon. I will give him credit for being one of the most admired citizens. He has gone through a lot. I will never leave the PPP and vote for another party but Freddie Kissoon is not a bad choice for government but not in Guyana at this time. He is in fact a national hero. I know there are many in the PPP that disagreed with how he was treated while we were in power. He knows me. He knows I like him. I talked to him several times. I do not and did not support violence against our critics. Most PPP leaders didn’t.
People like Nigel Hughes because they believe he is the brightest lawyer in Guyana and he could steer the ship of governance. Those who want to see a third party with Freddie and Nigel Hughes should note that the very problems the PPP encountered and was criticized for, Freddie and Hughes will face and they will end up being vilified. All that brilliant philosophical musings of Freddie Kissoon will melt like butter against the hot sun once he enters the halls of power. I doubt Freddie is made out for political office but those who are encouraging him will see his destruction once he steps into that office.
What can a new party bring to Guyana that the PPP couldn’t bring? What is the Coalition bringing? To see the state of our balance of payment would be shocking. It is bare. This government is running out of money. A financial crisis is on our hands. What the PPP never ever thought of – and I know this because I was part of such discussions – was foreign exchange control. We have information that this would be official policy shortly. I would ask the Guyanese people to recall this letter when that happens. We also know that price controls are coming.
I wish a third party well. But if those who are clamouring for it think it will make a difference then, they are in for the shock of their lives. You may hate the PPP for mistakes made but sit down with a fine teeth comb and go through the PPP’s stewardship. The economy did well and was doing well up to the point when we lost the elections. Let me end with some advice for the great Freddie Kissoon. What makes you think your middle class backers have the same dream as you?
