Dear Editor,
The Christmas season is upon us once more. We will be celebrating traditions. While some of those traditions may be decades and centuries old, it appears that some new ones are being adopted by the current guardians of the gate.
On Wednesday, senior officials of ‘A’ Division (Georgetown and East Bank Demerara) met with Commander Clifton Hickens. On top of the agenda were activities for the Christmas. It was with concerns that police ranks present there were told they had to raise 60 gifts per station and outpost for the Christmas parties in their respective areas.
No one dared to disagree, no one objected to the Commander. It was the same thing that happened last year. Police are also being given tickets to sell. Mr Editor, these are very few avenues to deal with matters like this. Police already have their hands full in very challenging conditions. We are being pressured now to do other work, other than police work. In addition to this, police ranks are supposed to engage with businesses to sell tickets and ask for donations. It places police in a dilemma to fairly carry out their duties if a situation arises against one of these businesses.
Police ranks are also complaining that although they are making efforts to collect the gifts and donations, their children are not being able to participate. Mr Editor, recently our Minister, Khemraj Ramjattan warned police to be careful how it takes charity. The reasons are obvious. They are now calling on President David Granger and Minister Ramjattan to investigate this bullying by the top brass of ‘A’ Division of the lower ranks.
