Ministry of Public Health to pay midwives
Dear Editor,
Midwives working within the public health sector in Regions One, Nine and Ten are expected to receive their salaries this month. Minister of Public Health, Dr. George Norton told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that he was not previously aware of the issue.
However, the names of the individuals are to be added to November month’s payroll. Minister Norton explained that, “The situation is solved (as) it was immediately looked into at the level of the Minister. The names of the nurses were placed on the payroll and they will be paid this month.”
The Public Health Minister said, “We regret this situation and every effort will be made to avoid it from ever repeating itself.” A letter to the Editor was published in Kaieteur newspaper on Thursday, November 10, 2016 where a ‘frustrated midwife’ speaking on behalf of others, expressed concerns over not being paid for the past 10 months.
The letter noted that “we are being pushed around for our hard earned salaries.” The midwife claimed that several efforts were made to contact relevant health officials but all efforts were futile.
