Twelve lucky recipients were awarded with the “Jubilee year home improvement subsidy voucher initiative,” on Monday.
Minister within the Housing Ministry, Valarie Adams-Patterson, while on her maiden trip to the Essequibo Coast as a Minister of Government, reminded Essequibians that her government intends to keep its promise to all Guyanese to have a good life.
She said that such life would not happen overnight but instead, with the mutual cohesiveness of everyone.
“We are asking you to be patient with us. It’s going to happen but it’s not going to happen tomorrow. You have your part to play as a Guyanese and as an Essequibian.”
Patterson explained that the “Jubilee home improvement subsidy initiative was part of a promise to the people by the coalition government and by extension, the Ministry of Housing and Central Planning committee.
Patterson added that earlier this year the ministry that she heads had a “Jubilee 50/50” promotion whereby, persons who already would have owned a plot of land in one of the housing schemes were required to pay a half down payment on the land and reap financial rewards.
After that promotion, 12 persons from the region were deemed successful.
Those persons received vouchers on Monday to purchase building materials to complete their houses.
Patterson added that early next year her ministry plans to embark on a recourse initiative whereby priority would be given to Government employees, young people and low income earners to acquire duplex or double apartments, at Onderneeming, a targeted area. Applicants however must have an application in the system.
Patterson did not shy away from informing Essequibians that her ministry intends to deal with prolonged issues of squatting and persons who are in receipt of numerous house lots. The Minister urged Essequibians to work collectively to bring about that much needed change that they long for.
The “Jubilee home improvement subsidy voucher initiative” was lobbied for in parliament which saw the release of $15M being set aside to be given to successful applicants for the purchase of materials to aid in the improvement of a number of homes across the country.
Visiting with the minister were senior community development officer, Donela Bess-Bascom; Regional Executive officer, Rupert Hopkinson; Regional Vice chairperson and Nandranie Coonjah.
Monday’s meeting with Patterson was held in the Region Two boardroom where students and adults attended.
