Region Five schools host literacy extravaganza

Students from throughout Region Five, Mahaica-Berbice, were on Thursday involved in what the

authorities called a Literacy Extravaganza, at Fort Wellington. This activity formed part of Education Month. The theme of the Month of Activities was ‘EACH CHILD MATTERS; STAKEHOLDERS UNITE FOR THE ENHANCEMENT OF EDUCATION.’
According to Regional Literacy Coordinator, Adele Whyte, the idea of the extravaganza came from the recognition of a need to further promote literacy within the education system.
It showcased the various components of literacy phonemic awareness, letter knowledge, concepts of print to list a few of such components, and at the same time providing students, teachers and parents with broader experiences so that the promotion of literacy can become a collaborative effort involving all the involved parties.
The expected outcome is that the average individual upon entering the world of work would be functionally literate, having benefitted from the education programme to which he or she would have been exposed.
The Coordinator emphasized that much of the materials used in creating the learning aids on display were obtained largely from materials which otherwise would have ended up in the garbage, so the creativity of teachers has been also highlighted. They used resources in their surroundings to enhance teaching and learning.

Meanwhile, individual schools have been having in-house programmes as part of the observances.
