Dear Editor,
Consumers of bread and bread-related products, country-wide, must have recognised that the “best before use” date is not displayed on any of these products’ packaging or plastic container. In most developed countries of the world, and some Caribbean states, all bread and bread-related products have “best before use” dates prominently displayed on the packaging or plastic containers; simply because of the need to allow consumers to make informed decision when they choose to buy these products, rather than buying them and not knowing when they will expire.
Editor, to illustrate the problem or dilemma of not having “best before use” dates on these products, I will share with the public my experience, which I am sure has been shared by many, many others. On Monday afternoon of this week, I bought a bag of whole wheat tennis rolls (large) from an East Coast gas station. The cost is immaterial. The outcome is what matters.
The next day morning, the entire bag of tennis rolls was filled with mold; thick green mold. Why can’t the manufacturer keep details of their manufacturing and stocking dates in the shops and supermarkets? In this way there would be some synchronization between manufacturing and stocking dates between shop/supermarket owners and the manufacturers so as to avoid these products remaining on shelves, rather than having poor unsuspecting consumers being duped into buying expired or near-to-be expired products. Secondly, manufacturers should be recalling all expired and near-to-be expired bread products from shelves. God knows how many consumers who do not know the potential dangers of consuming food products infected with molds are consuming mold-infected breads. The consumers association needs to do something about this and insist that these products due to their short shelf life carry “best before dates” on their packaging or plastic containers.
