The National Air Transport Association (NATA) of Guyana said Friday that it is concerned over the effects of serious congestion at Eugene F. Correia International Airport at Ogle on the East Coast of Demerara.
This is a result of “inequitable” development at the airport and the mixing of international and Domestic flights, the association said.
NATA revealed that there are over one hundred domestic flights operating daily – which contribute significantly to hinterland and national development, however the Association appears to be in a tight squeeze, since they claim that they are seriously affected by confined areas on the airport runway, apron and taxiways.
Fed up with years of complaints and challenges, nine out of ten operators at the Ogle Airport formed the National Air Transport Association (NATA). These operators according to NATA’s website are: Air Services Limited (ASL); Roraima Airways; Hinterland Aviation; Oxford Aviation; Phoenix Airways; Domestic Airways; Jags Aviation; Wings Aviation; Hopkinson Mining Aviation and Trans Guyana Airways. The latter company is not a part of the group.
NATA said that presently, these nine aircraft operators have no recourse other than sharing one older winding taxiway to access the runway which leads to much congestion and costly delays.
This situation has worsened over the years as newer operators came into being and older operators expanded their operations without the enabling infrastructure such as a new taxiway to the runway which is essential for efficient and safe operations, NATA stated.
This unhealthy situation is further compounded by congested airspace and the Association is concerned about the issues of operational safety under the present environment.
“NATA has made representation to Ogle Airport Inc (OAI) on behalf of its members to no avail and as such we are urging the Government to accelerate the review process undertaken by our focal Minister the Hon. David Patterson for remedies to the present anti-competitive and inequitable development of the airport.”
They are also calling for the urgent establishment of the long overdue National Airport Authority (NAA) which would ensure a fair, equitable and safe environment for both domestic and international operators.
