(Kaieteur News) – Guyana has officially launched its first major bamboo pilot project aimed at restoring degraded lands while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for forest-dependent communities.
The project was launched through the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC). The bamboo planting activity commenced under the project: “Piloting Bamboo for Restoration & Sustainable Livelihoods in Guyana.”
The initiative is funded by the European Union (EU) under the Euroclima programme and will be implemented with technical assistance from Expertise France and the International Bamboo & Rattan Organisation (INBAR).
Since 2023, the National Forest Restoration Initiative (NFRI), a collaborative effort between the GFC and the Guyana Geology & Mines Commission (GGMC) under the Ministry of Natural Resources, provided a framework for exploring restoration with consideration of non-timber and agro-forestry pathways alongside native forest species.
In an expanded initiative, the Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat brought bamboo to the forefront as a fast-growing revegetation option to create short-to-medium-term restored landscapes while supporting sustainable livelihoods and economies.
Bamboo plants of the species Bambusa vulgaris var. vulgaris are being trialed for the restoration of a mined-out bauxite site in the old Coomacka mines area, close to the Maria Elizabeth/Three Friends community. This will be done with the technical guidance of INBAR. Notably, almost 500 bamboo plants will be planted today at Coomacka, Region 10. This exercise will be replicated in other areas throughout the country.
Moreover, mining communities in Region 10 have been steady partners in designing a project that fits the context of their landscape. The flagship project continues to focus on actionable and tangible targets not only for bamboo trials but for building knowledge and capacity at all levels. It also sets the stage for dynamic partnerships in a new industry based in nature and sustainability.
