productive activity for those youths as a means of curtailing such demeaning behaviour.
Popular football coach, Sampson Gilbert, has risen to the challenge and ever since August 2 has been tutoring more than 40 children in the intricacies of football along with other life enhancing skills. Activities will culminate this afternoon.
Gilbert explained that the programme is conducted under the Tavel Foundation Youth Organization and is currently entertaining participation among youths ranging between 5-17 years old.
Tavel Gilbert, Sampson’s son, was a budding rugby player who died 3 years ago after involvement in a vehicular accident. Activities are being conducted on the playfield, obliquely opposite the East Ruimveldt community on Mandela Avenue, where Tavel met his end and when Kaieteur Sport visited the training area, the children were engaged in a football match among themselves under the tutelage of Gilbert with able assistance from football referee, Mark Young.
Gilbert explained that the programme has been an annual one but this is the first time it will be held in the East Ruimveldt community where Tavel met his demise. “These sessions were planned to facilitate the all round development of the youths, strengthen their academic base and assist those in need of remedial work,” Gilbert explained.
So far, the children were tutored on the laws of the game (football), nutrition and the proper application of warm up and warm down exercises. An official from the Guyana Police Force narcotic department will conduct a session on the detriments of illicit drug use just before the curtains are drawn.
Yesterday morning, a team from the Bel Air Lions Club, headed by President, Matthew Langevine and Co-Chairman of the Environmental Committee, Jeremiah Layne, visited the venue and donated several haversacks to the children.
Earlier in the programme, University of Guyana graduate, social worker, Odessa Abrams, spoke to the children on issues pertaining to child abuse. They were also lectured on nutrition and sensible eating.
Mr. Gilbert said that he was pleased with the turn out as well as the enthusiasm displayed by the children during sessions. He noted that he was required to work a little harder in the orientation of some of these children but felt that they have benefited immensely from the programme.
All of the participants will receive certificates donated by the proprietor of Trophy Stall, Ramesh Sunich. Some other sponsors of the programme are Chung Global Enterprise, Star Party Rental, Hunt Portable Rental, Dynasty, Big Boss Trucking Service, Trevor Beckles and Caribbean Airline and Industrial Supply and Services, Oasis Water and KC Taxi Service among others. Several private individuals have also donated to the initiative.
