2016 North American & Caribbean Powerlifting Championships…
By Franklin Wilson
Karel Mars powered his way to a new Caribbean squat record of 340kg (749.6lbs)
in landing the gold medal in the Open 105kg category at the 9th IPF/NAPF Caribbean Regional Championships / 14th Annual IPF/NAPF North American Regional Powerlifting Championships at the Renaissance Hotel Carambola Beach Resort in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, yesterday.
The 36-year-old Mars, battling against old rival Adrian Brown (silver) put on a flawless performance as he nailed all his lifts in the squat, bench press and deadlift while the 40-year-old Brown who took gold in the Master 1 category failed his first attempt at squat and his 3rd and final bench press and deadlift.
Guyana’s other competitor yesterday; Erwyn Smith won the silver medal in the Open 93kg class with gold and bronze going to Neilson Viera of Puerto Rico and Lawrence Marlon Belfon of Trinidad and Tobago.
Mars and Smith’s medals compliments that of the lone female on the Guyana team, Andrea Alicia Smith who had taken the bronze medal on Wednesday in the Women’s 63kg Open category.
Smith missed his 3rd attempts in all three lifts but was well within the silver lane throughout the competition. Viera also achieved a new Caribbean Bench Press record with his third and final attempt of 200.0kg (442.0lbs). The Guyanese team will return home tomorrow.
While Belfon had to settle for the bronze in the Open division, his scores earned him the gold medal in the Masters 1 category where, like his countryman Brown, were the lone competitors.
Following are the best scores of the Guyanese and their competitors in the two divisions:
