The Guyana Cricket Board/Scotiabank Kiddy coaching programme commenced yesterday at Bayrock ground in the mining town of Linden where students are being tutored on the basics of the game.
Sessions are being conducted by coaches Michael Hyles Franco and Andrew Allen and will conclude on Friday.
GCB treasurer Anand Kalladeen, Territorial Development Officer and former West Indies fast bowler Colin Stuart, Nicholas Fraser of the Ministry of Education Allied Arts Department and Scotiabank Marketing Manager Jennifer Cipriani met with the youths yesterday.
Cipriani urged that students to remain disciplined and focus on their education, adding that they are happy to partner with the GCB for the venture, while Kalladeen urged the youths to take the game seriously so that they can develop into the world class players.
Fraser spoke of the importance of such venture and lauded the GCB and Scotiabank for their input.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, Stuart said the clinic targets youths between the ages of 7-12 and focus mainly on cricket related and cricket specific activities.
“The aim is to give participants information about cricket that could help them develop their skills. What we find at this level is that some youths may show good natural talent while there are some who have to work hard to develop, we really can’t say where who will go forward at this age so the coaches will work on the various departments with the students,” he added.
Stuart indicated that they have indentified coaches in the area who will work along with their more senior counterparts and teachers in schools in the new term so the programme will continue. He informed that they GCB held a similar clinic in Essequibo in August and will be conducting another in Berbice and Georgetown later in the year stating that the programme targets over 200 primary schools.
