Passengers who were stranded at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) due to technical difficulties being experienced by the America 11 Cable have returned home.
This was according to a CJIA spokesperson yesterday.
According to reports, several flights were delayed, while some were cancelled after there was a collapse of the Amerrica’s Two cable located off the French Caribbean island of Martinique some time on Sunday last.
The cable which feeds data to SITA – an information technology (IT) company that provides IT and telecommunication services to the air transport industry – had rendered the Automated Airlines Check-in services inoperable, resulting in airlines conducting their check-ins manually – a process that takes hours longer.
On Monday, tensions had begun to run high as several passengers began to cry out; demanding answers from their respective service providers including, while many took to the media venting their frustration.
Meanwhile, many complained about the hospitality on the part of the service providers whom, according to reports – did not ‘even give passengers a glass of water’. An Airport Spokesperson had provided arguments to solidify his claims that that 90 percent of the delays and cancellations resulted from operational issues on the part of the Airlines and not the airport.
After an uproar at the waiting area at the CJIA, several passengers were given their baggage and told to return the following day (Tuesday) while some airlines made arrangements to have their passengers stay at several hotels in the city and along the East Bank Demerara, reports stated.
According to reports, the system went back online around 14:30hrs yesterday and several airlines including Insel Air, Dynamic Airlines and Eastern Airlines were working to clear the backlog of passengers.
According to Dynamic Airlines Representative and Roraima Airways Principal, Gerry Gouveia, all of their passengers have been taken out of Guyana and everything is running back on schedule.
“We brought in an extra plane; one of our big jumbo jets. We took out 280 people today,” he said.
He also stated that Insel Air is running back on schedule and there is no backlog.
Passengers, who were scheduled to depart via Eastern Airlines on Sunday, had departed yesterday, an official stated.
