Dear Editor,
The savage killings of close to one hundred people in France once again bring to the fore, the dangers posed to humanity at the hands of terrorist elements who seem bent on creating havoc regardless of the human cost. Countless lives have been lost including those of women and children over the past few years and there is no indication that this war against terrorism unleashed by the George Bush administration following the destruction of the World Trade Centre over a decade and a half ago is being successfully contained much less won.
If anything, it has now spread to several western capitals particularly in Western Europe.
There now exists, a high element of fear among citizens in the United States and other western capitals regarding their safety against terrorist attacks from extremist elements despite an escalation of anti-terrorist measures. The rise and spread of ISIS in the Middle East which is further compounded by political instability in several countries in the region is creating a nightmare for the US administration and its allies in the region.
It seems obvious that there cannot be a military solution to what is an ideological problem between the West on the one hand and the Muslim world on the other hand. At the root of the problem is a deeply held perception that the United States in particular and the West in general dislike Muslims, a view reinforced by presidential hopeful Donald Trump who threatened to ban Muslims from entering the United States.
There is an urgent need for dialogue by key players in the corridors of power led by the United Nations on the way forward. The solution to the crisis in the Middle East more particularly the Palestinian question is in my humble view a necessary though not sufficient factor in terms of arriving at a lasting solution to the problem which currently exists.
