…lest it result in deteriorating relations between the two
When it comes to Venezuela’s recent insinuations that Guyana is perhaps concocting false stories in an effort to destabilize its economy, Foreign Affairs Minister, Carl Greenidge, said that this is anything but true.
Greenidge made this remark in light of a statement that was issued by the Government of the Bolivian Republic of Venezuela which denied reports that its troops had fired on Guyanese officials traversing the Cuyuni River on May 30, last.
Greenidge said that he can only interpret this as the Government of Venezuela suggesting that the Guyana Government fabricated the story.
The Foreign Affairs Minister said that in the first instance, it is unfortunate that the Government of Guyana was not afforded the courtesy of an official response to the Diplomatic Note.
Greenidge said that the statement which the Government of the Bolivian Republic of Venezuela has chosen to release to the media flies in the face of direct reports which the authorities of Guyana received from the victims as well as the explanation which the representatives of Guyana’s military received on May 31, last, from the Venezuelan Corporal-in-Charge of the six troops who were involved in the incident.
Greenidge said that the Venezuelan authorities would have done well to have checked with the troops in question at the Observation Post, La Boca, on Ankoko Island who had furnished Guyana’s investigators with an explanation which the Government of Guyana believes and which it has found to involve unacceptable behavior because it assumed that they had rights of policing the river which is in Guyana’s territory.
The Foreign Affairs Minister said that in the past, such actions led to the loss of lives while emphasizing that it is irresponsible to brush off this incident, an occurrence which the Government of Guyana continues to hold as being completely reprehensible.
Greenidge categorically stated that the Government dismisses the claims by the Venezuelan Government in its release that Guyana’s actions are part of an “international media campaign” and “an international effort to destabilize Venezuela”. He said that such allegations do not even merit a response.
Greenidge said that Guyana has been and will continue to be a peaceful and law-abiding neighbour with no interest in any other country’s territory or in destabilizing its administration.
He also reiterated the government’s position that Venezuela must desist from provocative actions on Guyana’s border since such acts could only lead to the destabilization of relations between the two countries.
