Dear Editor,
Enclosed is evidence to support the fact that a well known but controversial private school is harbouring a child predator. This predator was dismissed by the Teaching Service Commission for inappropriate touching and attempted rape of numerous children at Rosignol Primary School on the East Bank of Berbice. Please see story in the Chronicle of January 27, 2015
As a former colleague of the teacher in question, I was quite shocked when I recently learnt that the individual is rendering service at this school. He has decided to take up residence in Georgetown and secretly continue his professional life secluded at a private institution where no one knows anything about him and his past exploits.
Recently, there has been an influx of letters written about this school thus my interest was captured. Apart from all that was mentioned about the institution, the issue at hand is the most worrying. What if an innocent child becomes victim of unspeakable sexual misconduct? I vividly recall the period when the teacher was exposed. The headteacher along with myself became objects of discrimination when we spoke out against the horrendous acts committed on children over a number of years.
After the matter came to light, the Teaching Service Commission carried out a thorough investigation. Due to startling findings, the teacher was dismissed. At that time NCERD had implemented the ‘Tell Scheme Programme’ which was meant to encourage pupils to speak out against sexual abuse. Sadly, it was not introduced at Rosignol Primary. Many of the children who suffered at the hands of this predator are presently experiencing emotional and psychological trauma. Yes, the teacher was dismissed but is this enough to suffice for the damage done to those children?
There were persons who laid the blame squarely at the feet of the children but in my opinion they did not stand a chance against an easy going, unassuming bodybuilder. Many children are today longing for a father figure in their lives. Teachers are some of the first persons they turn to in order to fulfill that need. How can we as teachers betray that trust?
