… over workers’ lack of sanitary cleaning gear
An issue highlighted in the Freddie Kissoon Column of Wednesday’s edition was the fact that workers employed by City Hall in the overall clean-up of the Georgetown municipality, more often than not, lack the proper equipment
and protection gear to deal with the unhealthy and deplorable working conditions.
Mr. Kissoon in his column, noted that; “At Shiv Chanderpaul Drive and Robb Street, outside Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, a cleaning crew stopped me to complain about the heartless attitude of this galaxy of politicians who are more concerned with appearances than workers’ health.”
He also indicated that the workers complained about gloves and disinfectant not being provided for them. This situation is quite worrying given the often atrocious state of the city’s drains and trenches.
Public relations Officer (PRO) for the Mayor and City Council, Mrs. Debra Lewis when reached for comments on this situation, told this newspaper that the cleaning crew that stopped Mr. Kissoon was not directly M&CC workers, but were in fact employed by a private contractor hired by City Hall.
She said that all City Hall workers that are engaged in the cleaning of the streets, drains and trenches of Georgetown are provided with protective gear and the requisite cleansing agents for health purposes during these cleaning exercises.
Lewis said that the private contractors that City Hall hires to clean certain sections of the city are in charge of providing their workers with the necessary protective and sanitary gear for the tasks at hand.
She added that while some contractors do provide these gears, some do not. She also noted that some contractors have indicated that some of the workers decline to use the equipment provided.
Mrs. Lewis told Kaieteur News that City Hall has planned to meet with these contractors in the near future to address the issue of workers not being provided with equipment.
