– “We called GPL many times to come and fix the post they got here but they never came.”
Four persons are now homeless after a fire, believed to be electrical in origin, destroyed their two-storey home around 03:30 hrs yesterday at Lot 102 Campbellville Housing Scheme.
According to information received the couple and their two children who reside at the property, were not at home when the fire started in the kitchen area of the upper flat.
Neighbours said that they smelled smoke and when they peeped out, they saw fire in the building. They said that they immediately formed a bucket brigade and managed to contain the fire to that building until the fire fighters arrived— the apartment which is attached to the destroyed building was saved.
When this newspaper visited the scene yesterday, the occupants of the property were not at home.
Neighbours said that it was the man’s birthday and he had gone out with his family when the fire started in his home.
While the outside of the building seemed like the damage was minimal, the inside of the property and everything that was there were completely destroyed.
One resident said that one of the Guyana Power Light (GPL) utility poles in the area is broken and currently leans on a tree—this has caused major issues in the area for the last two weeks with residents’ complaining about experiencing fluctuation in electricity.
“We called GPL many times and when one crew came, they fixed the fluctuation problem. They left and said that everything was okay now,” the woman said. But she claimed that she continued to experience load shedding.
She said that early yesterday one of her neighbours called and told her to take off her main switch.
“When I got up my place already had blackout so I run downstairs and took off the main switch. Then my daughter-in-law told me that she smelled something burning and when my son peep out he said that the neighbour house burning,” the woman stated.
She explained that while they waited on the fire service to arrive, her son and other neighbours formed a bucket brigade and fetched water from her home to put out the fire.
“When the first fire tender came, they had no water. Another fire tender had to come with water,” the woman said.
Neighbours are blaming GPL for the fire. They said that if the power company had fixed the problem with the utility pole, then the fluctuation would have stopped and the fire could have been prevented.
