A police constable was yesterday charged for causing the death of 10-year-old Davin Sealey
in a road accident on Sunday.
Ravinand Bissessar, 26, of 37 Good Intent, West Bank Demerara, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving when he appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse at the Wales Magistrates Court. He was not required to plead to the charge which said on Sunday, May 15, at Sisters Village Public Road, he drove motor car PLL 222 in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the death of Davin Sealey.
Bissessar’s lawyer, Mark Conway, succeeded in securing bail for his client stating that he was not a flight risk. He also told the court that his client is remorseful about the incident.
Bissessar was granted $600,000 bail with the special condition that he report every Friday at 15:00hrs (3pm) at the Wales Police Station and lodge his driver’s licence.
A second charge stated that he was driving the aforementioned vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. The level was reportedly .66 over the prescribed limit.
The prosecution indicated that the defendant was driving when his vehicle was involved in an accident on the Sisters Village Public road. It was revealed that police officers quickly launched investigations where Bissessar was subjected to a breathalyser test. The test showed that he was over the prescribed limit. He was subsequently arrested and charged for the offence.
When the magistrate asked the defendant if he agreed with the prosecutor’s facts, a few seconds slipped by before the man, who wore a bandage on his forehead, broke the silence with a clear “no”. The magistrate then recorded a not guilty plea on his behalf. He was later placed on his own recognisance.
Bissessar’s defence disclosed that though the breathalyser test was performed by the police, his client had taken a test from a doctor at a hospital where it was revealed that he had no alcohol in his system. Though the lawyer said that he did not have the results of the test in court, the magistrate scheduled June 22 for the commencement of trial.
