Black Bush Polder teen to face judge and jury for murder
Navendra Basdeo, called ‘Phone’, 19, of 14 Johanna, North Black Bush Polder will have to stand trial for murder in the next criminal session of the Berbice High Court. That was following the conclusion of a preliminary inquiry which was conducted

before Magistrate Charlene Artiga at the Mibicuri Magistrate’s Court, Black Bush Polder.
Basdeo is on trial for the gruesome murder of Karan Sukhdeo called “Vishal”, 30, a truck driver and father of one, of 101 Johanna North Black Bush Polder. Sukdeo was killed on August 23, 2014 following an altercation with a group of men at a wedding house.
The incident allegedly occured around 23:45 hrs at Johanna North, Black Bush Polder.
Prosecutor Inspector, Elton Davidson, conducted the matter on behalf of the State. Attorney at law, Mursalene Bacchus, appeared for the accused.
Davidson called 12 witnesses, including four police officers and eight civilians.
The dead man’s brother, Ramesh Sukhdeo, had told the media that he, his brother and others were standing on the street in front of the wedding house. He left his brother for a few minutes and on his return he heard screams. He then saw his brother in a scuffle with four men who were over him.
He ran towards his brother who collapsed and the men escaped. He thought that his brother was unconscious but as he got closer he saw blood oozing from his body and then realized his brother was seriously wounded.
After his brother failed to respond, he ran home and contacted his father who came with their car and they rushed him to the Mibicuri Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The dead man’s wife, Devi, had stated that she was in the yard at the wedding house when she heard screaming. When she went to inquire the source of the commotion she recognised her mortally wounded husband in a drain.
He was reportedly stabbed seven times. A post mortem examination conducted by Dr. Vivekanand Brijmohan, at the New Amsterdam Hospital showed that he died from multiple injuries.
He received two stab wounds in the Region of the heart and others about the body. The matter was subsequently reported and a number of men were arrested and taken into custody. A file was prepared and sent to the Director of Public Prosecution who advised that Basdeo be charged.
Prosecutor Davidson in his submission relief on the evidence and told the court that there was enough evidence including those of eye witnesses for the matter to go before a Judge and Jury.
Defence Attorney Bacchus had put forward a no case submission since he stated that there was no case for his client to answer.
However, after listening to the submissions from both sides, and ruled that there was sufficient evidence for the matter to be tried before a Judge and Jury.
