The Ministry of Public Infrastructure is in the final stages of completing the first phase of the D’Urban Park Development Project.
Minister David Patterson, during a recent visit to the site, stated that he noticed a great change in the progress of work being done at the site.
Minister Patterson, told media personnel that the Ministry managed to make significant progress since they took charge of the project in late April.
When the Ministry assumed responsibility of the D’Urban Park project, six areas of focus were identified for completion in a period of three weeks.
These areas were roofing and remedial works for spectator bleachers; completion of general superstructures, walls and roof for the VIP (Very Important Persons) stand; electrical wiring, lighting and power supply; access driveways and bridges; creation of sanitary blocks; and drainage works.
These works were slated to be completed by the end of this week. Minister Patterson said that the deadline remains the same. He stated that the goal is to have the site ready to be handed over to the National Commemorative Committee by this weekend for further preparations for the Independence Jubilee celebrations.
“A tremendous amount of work has been done and will continue to be done,” Minister Patterson said.
He added that heavy emphasis was placed on the safety of all the installed facilities while Chief Works Officer, Mr. Geoffrey Vaughn, noted that the factor of safety was improved from about 2.2 to 3.0.
Minister Patterson posited that the contractors have been very cooperative and he congratulated them for working assiduously despite the recent inclement weather conditions.
He noted that at least 96 percent of works on the stands and bleachers have been completed, while all stands have been outfitted with roofs. The VIP stand’s progress has been recorded at about 73 percent, while the Ministry’s Special Projects Unit, which is responsible for the project’s road works, has achieved about ninety percent completion.
