Ryan Barker, a labourer was on Monday remanded to prison by Magistrate Fabayo Azore when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts charged for the possession of an illegal substance.
Barker, 29, of 5B Dowding Street, Kitty, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the allegation which stated that on January 1, at Georgetown he had 30 grams of cannabis-sativa (marijuana) in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Barker will return to court on January 28.
Police Prosecutor, Simone Payne, told the court that Police Ranks were on patrol in the area and approached Barker. According to the Prosecutor the defendant was caught by the police throwing away a package. The police retrieved the package and found a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.
Payne said that Barker was told of the offence committed, arrested and charged.
Attorney Peter Hugh, who represented the defendant, told the court that his client should be admitted to bail because the Camp Street Prison is overcrowded. He also pointed out that the illegal substance was found in the grass.
