The sailor whose body was retrieved from the Berbice River has been identified as Shahabudeen Haniff of Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara.
The remains of the 49-year-old man were found in the net of a fishing vessel that was working in the vicinity of the Berbice River, on Monday. The deceased was a member of the crew of fishing boat Esperanza 110 that had sailed on December 30, 2015 from a wharf at New Hope, East Bank Demerara for the Berbice area.
Haniff’s family declined to comment on the passing of their loved one. A relative of the dead man told Kaieteur News that they have been receiving conflicting information surrounding the death of Haniff.
The relative said that the ideal persons to get information from about Haniff’s death were his crew members. However, the captain for the vessel and several of the dead man’s co-workers refused to speak with the media. Kaieteur News understands that the crew members are assisting the police with investigations.
A Post Mortem examination will be performed on the body today.
