A Sophia bus conductor, who was caught by a police officer committing a traffic offence, was yesterday brought before the court, after he was accused of assaulting the said officer.
Appearing before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan was Keon Wilson, 21, of Sophia. He was granted bail in the sum of $10,000 on four charges.
The first charge leveled before Wilson alleged that on October 17, at Croal Street, Georgetown, he assaulted Keifer Henry, a policeman acting in execution of his duties.
It was also alleged that on the same day, at Croal Street, Georgetown, he resisted arrest. Further, Wilson was accused of behaving disorderly in a public place on the day in question.
And finally, it was alleged that Wilson damaged a police pants valued at $3,500- property of the Guyana Police Force.
The defendant, who was represented by attorney, Paul Fung-a-Fat pleaded not guilty to the charges after they were read to him in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Fung-a-Fat asked the court to admit his client to reasonable bail. The lawyer explained that on the day in question, his client was merely trying to defend himself and his actions were not intentional.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones did not oppose bail for the defendant. While relating the facts of the matter, the prosecutor informed the court that on October 17, at Croal Street, Georgetown the defendant was seen by the officer committing a traffic offence. Jones added that the lawman held a confrontation with Wilson, who became annoyed and assaulted the officer.
This matter comes up again on November 13.
