Officials of the Boyce & Jefford Classic and NAMILCO display the certificates for the winner of next weekend’s event in Linden at yesterday’s presentation at the sponsors East Bank location.
The countdown has long begun and with just one week to show time, athletics lovers countrywide are eagerly awaiting the start of the 6th edition of the Boyce & Jefford Classic scheduled for the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, Linden August 15-16 starting at 13:00hrs each day.
The organizers are busily putting the modalities in place for a qualitative show and have been soliciting the support of corporate Guyana. Yesterday morning, officials of the National Milling Company (NAMILCO) responded affirmatively and Chairman of the Boyce/Jefford Committee, Colin Boyce and his Co-Founder, Edison Jefford, trooped to the Eccles EBD location of the flour giants to receive a package from its administrators. NAMILCO’s contribution came in the form of certificates for the respective winners and runners up.
The simple ceremony was conducted in the NAMILCO boardroom and was chaired by Affeeze Khan. Also in attendance were Finance Controller (NAMILCO), Fitzroy McLeod and Accountant, Vishal Lalbachan. Mr. Khan said that his organization is always pleased to reach out to sponsors of sports activities since it is developmental to young people. He said that his administrators are impressed with efficiency and as such, readily responded to the appeal for assistance.
Mr. McLeod expressed similar sentiments and reiterated that NAMILCO is always keen to partner with those organizations that support young people’s development. He wished the organizers well even as he urged the public to support the initiative.
Both of the organizers expressed deep gratitude to their benefactor for the kind gesture. “Sports development is only made possible through intervention like this from the corporate community and we are indeed grateful for such support,” said Mr. Jefford. Mr. Boyce was equally gratified, “This is indeed a pleasing gesture and I trust that we would continue to receive such patronage from your firm in our future endeavors,” he said.
The forum will be blessed with the presence of four Jamaican athletes, Nicholas Maitland (200m), Keno Burrell (400m), Deandre Whitehorne (100m) and Seidatha Palmer (200m), accompanied by a coach from Racers Track Club, Patrick Dawson while another athlete, Bahamian Petra McDonald will compete in the 100m and 200m races.
Several other Caribbean countries are expected to comprise a part of the meet including Trinidad and Tobago which is expected to send Mark London for the 800m male event and Tonya Nero for the 1500m and 3000m. Suriname’s 2014 bronze medalist in the 100m, Danielle Clarke, will also be a feature of the event. Additionally, Grenada’s Kenisha Pascal will compete in the (women) 1500m, while St. Vincent and the Grenadines Josh Hamilton will battle in the 100m and 200m sprint events
