The horses from the local stables have been doing good gallops and from all indications they are ready to throw down the gauntlet on their overseas counterparts when the Port Mourant Turf Club in collaboration with Jumbo Jet Auto Sales stage its 9th annual Guyana Cup Horserace extravaganza at Port Mourant race track on Sunday August 16 from 12:00 hrs.
The organizers are bent on presenting the best meet since the inauguration and have been sourcing support from the business community. To this effect, Digicel has been the latest corporate entity to render support and yesterday afternoon two representatives of Jumbo Jet Auto Sales, Race coordinator Nazrudeen Mohammed (Jnr) and Ravin DeSouza visited the Kingston offices of Digicel where Events and Sponsorship Manager Gavin Hope pledged support for the event and officially handed over the requisite document.
He reminded media operatives of his company’s commitment to the event and said that this is the 3rd successive year that they are on board. “This event has grown considerably over the years and is now regarded as the Mecca of horseracing so we are pleased to be associated with such a qualitative event,” exhorted Mr. Hope.
He further noted that administrators have paid stringent attention to security even as they have assured that the quality of the races would be enhanced by the inclusion of thoroughbreds from other countries in the Caribbean and North America. He urged support for the event while emphasizing that such support serves as the oxygen to the success of these events.
Mr. Mohammed expressed deep appreciation for the gift and assured his benefactor that it would contribute to the success of the event. He joined Mr. Hope and called for additional support from corporate Guyana as well as patrons on race day.
The first race runs off at 12:00hrs and will be followed by 10 other potentially captivating events. The feature event, the A1 and Lower, will be contested over 1800m and carries a total prize package of $7.5 million and before the day is out, winners will pocket hundreds of thousands of dollars while turfites are assured of an action packed day.
Other races to be competed include the 3 years West Indian bred over 1 mile, the 2 years WI bred over 1000m, E1 & Lower over a similar distance, 4 years WI bred over 1 mile and the F3 & Lower and the G3 & Lower, both over a distance of 1200m. Four other races will be run over 1000m including the 2 yrs event among Guyanese bred horses, I1 & Lower, J & Lower and the Unclassified event.
The rules governing this event are inflexible and could be obtained from Chandu Ramkissoon (624-9063; 232-0633) and Kris Jagdeo (624-6123; 322-0369).
