Kaieteur Sports – The Pan American Draughts Championship concluded at the Dalian National Mind Sports Complex, University Complex, Paramaribo, Suriname Sunday last, as Guyana’s National Draughts players Jiaram and Floyd Cumberbatch put forth strong challenges against the international players.
Eleven countries contested the biennial event. Allan DaSilva from Brazil won the title for the sixth time. Cumberbatch made seven points in the regular 10×10 games and ended in the 8th position among 32 contestants.
Jiaram with eight points (8) in the blitz competition ended in 7th position among the 46 players that contested the blitz. Cumberbatch did not contest the blitz.
12 females stood off in a separate tournament while 10 under-20 youths played in an intense competition. Guyana was not able to send females and youths.
According to the President of the local body, Jiaram, things are in process through the Hon. President of Guyana to construct a Draughts school for the training of these categories. Should all go well, the 24th Games (2028) in Jamaica would see all categories taking part.
Cumberbatch, who had his first PanAm outing, said it was a great experience and would be preparing for another outing, while Jiaram’s first PanAm outing was in Costa Rica 2024.
Both players were awarded certificates and medals for their involvement by the PAMDCC and the Suriname Dam Bond.
