All inclusive participation for Uitvlugt #2 Scheme CDC Emancipation Day activities
Every year around this time members of the African Cultural Development Association (ACDA) convene at the National Park, Thomas Lands on August 1, in ritualistic acknowledgement of Emancipation Day and this year all systems are in place for another successful event.
Activities will not only be confined to the Capital City as the Uitvlugt #2 Scheme Community Development Committee is also putting the mechanisms in place for similar celebrations with a series of activities in their community. Amidst it all, veteran marathon runner, Carlton Stephenson, a former resident of Uitvlugt now residing in Sophia, has been chosen to spearhead activities and he said that he is planning something special for the youths. He will start his jog from the Red Shop, Sophia and join a group of youths at Anna Catherina for the final leg of the run, to Liberty Square.
Mr. Stephenson said that he will carry a sealed baton with an inspirational message secreted inside. He will hand over the baton to one of the youths at the Anna Catherina point and that individual will take it all the way into Uitvlugt and pass it over to the Chairman. The latter individual will then extract the message from the baton during the prize giving ceremony and read its contents before the audience. “The message will be based on Emancipation celebrations and will serve to inspire the youths,” intimated Mr. Stephenson while hedging on the full contents of the message.
Meanwhile, activities get underway on Friday July 31 with a Candle Light Parade starting at the Liberty Square (Four Corners) followed by a Libation Ceremony before culminating with the flag raising ceremony; the marathon run will be on Emancipation Day and commences at 04:00hrs. Shortly after the culmination of the marathon and the reading of the message residents will convene for a fun day from 10:00hrs also at the Liberty Square. There will be several novelty events like tug-o-war, dominoes and needle and thread. Organizers have also planned several sports events including football dominoes and fishing competitions. In keeping with the spirit of the occasion there will be traditional African dishes on sale.
Activities will conclude with a cultural programme and art and craft exhibition at 15:00hrs. At this event villagers will showcase their talent and cultural skills while African dishes will be on sale. Further, six of the village’s oldest residents (3 males and a similar number of females) will receive special gifts.
