Dear Editor,
I read in your newspaper dated July 11, 2015 with utter dismay and terrible shock that Venezuela is planning to issue ID cards to us Essequibians. This I consider to be an abominable act on the part of Venezuela and must be rejected not only by the Government of Guyana but also solidly by the people of Essequibo. Essequibo belongs to the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and to bully Essequibo from us is not just downright wrong but wicked in its totality.
Essequibo Coast has a lot of rice farmers and the bulk of its people live on the coast line. Venezuela has decided to halt the rice for oil deal with the expectation that farmers will be forced to agree with their demonic actions and ambivalent attitudes, but we are stronger than that.
Editor, Venezuela has absolutely no shame. It is a country with millions of people, vast amount of lands, enormous amount of resources and is far way more developed that our poor Guyana. Now that we are exploring our rightful lands and waters for our rightful resources so that we can become a more developed country and better the lives of our people, we are being hampered by the monstrous and malevolent actions of a country that is supposed to be our friendly neighbour.
It is quite clear and must be noted that this sudden action is only because we have found oil. This bullish action must be condemned. Essequibo is possibly the richest part of our country. Mineral resources are in abundance, about 200 000 peaceful Guyanese citizen live in the Cinderella county. We are a peaceful people, and at no time must Venezuela or any other country use that as their advantage for being peaceful is not a weakness.
Against this back drop, I call on all my Essequibian brothers and sisters to reject Venezuela’s barbarism. We must unite as one people and one nation, stand tall against our external enemies. Let us join together with our President – His Excellency David Granger as we call on our South American sister countries, Caribbean sister countries, the ABC countries and the commonwealth countries to denounce this notorious move by a country that has far way more than what we have.
Even though we are a peaceful people, at no time can we win Venezuela in a war that is exactly why we need the diplomatic support of external influential powers.
I love my Guyanese ID card. I don’t want a Venezuelan ID card. I am a born Guyanese and would die a Guyanese. More specific, I am a born Essequibian and would die an Essequibian. To those who don’t hold my views and believe through selfish thinking that life would be better under Venezuela then you should know that, “you never miss the waters till the wells run dry.”
Editor I end with a quote my dad taught me, “Pick with your own size.”
