DEAR EDITOR,
Reference is made to a Freddie Kissoon’s column ‘Theoretical implications of the 2015 election results’ in which it is stated that “What this election results show is that in the Caricom area, the least modern nation is Guyana” (KN Jun 23).
From what logic or reasoning is that conclusion formed? The election was not conducted to determine the development stage of Guyana. The Guyana election was held to determine which party or political force would govern the nation. In fact, all elections around the globe are held for that purpose unless it is a referendum on an issue.
As best as I know and as indicated by Caricom, no referendum or election was held in any member state to determine which Caricom country is the least or most modern. And one cannot make such a determination based on an election result to choose a national government.
Had Freddie read W.W Rostow on stages of development, he would have understood the concept of development and modernization.
I urge him that now that his goal of defeating the PPP has been achieved, he should take a rest and stop the unwarranted attacks against good, honest, decent people. Vishnu Bisram
