Dear Editor,
The primary challenge of President Granger’s leadership will be to find ethical, moral, and strategic, competent and influential ways to be effective, productive and constructively unifying and visionary. Former President Ramotar failed in leadership but will President Granger succeed in leadership? Will David Granger do things right? Will he do the right things for all Guyanese and with his party, his appointees, Guyana’s ethnic diversity, and his country?
We support Granger and Moses, but cannot support 26 Ministers for one of the poorest country in this hemisphere. The cost of sustaining 26 Ministers, plus a 10% increase in pay for Public Servants, plus a planned reduction in the VAT rate and increasing the basket of zero-rated VAT goods, plus a possible increase in the personal tax free allowance for workers, etc., must be cause for great concern, especially for the new Minister of Finance, Winston Jordan. Guyana should not have more than 10 Ministers. Our economy and GDP are too small to accommodate a greater number of Ministers. I believe even the USA does not have 26 Ministers. And with the USA, we are talking of a 15-20 trillion dollar economy.
Mr. President, if extraordinary events or external uncontrollable shocks adversely hit Guyana and its exports, prudent management of its International Reserves, current account and fiscal deficit, and the country’s Net Cash Flow surplus or deficit will become even more critical.
The IMF will be back with their recipe for devaluation, sacking of workers, increases in cost of services and other severe austerity measures, etc., in order for you to get their financial help. Mandy Nelson
