An authoritative unbeaten 88 from West Indies t20 all-rounder Chris Barnwell
spearheaded DCC to an emphatic 84-run win against an outclassed GYO unit at the DCC ground in Queenstown in the opening round of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Carib Beer t20 first division cricket tournament yesterday.
Played under murky skies on a nice hard track and small ground, DCC rattled up an imposing 188-5 with Barnwell smashing five fours and eight sixes in his 41-ball innings. National opener Trevon Griffith (24) and Kevin Boodie (26) offered support to Barnwell.
There were some good spells from left-arm spinners Trevon France (1-26 from 4 overs) and Mark Hamilton (1-31 from 4) who opened the bowling, and the experienced medium pacer Antony Ifill, who bowled cleverly at the ‘death’ to finish with 1-36 from four overs.
GYO was a one man army when they batted with Ifill returning with the bat to hit a fighting 53 from 50 balls with six fours and two towering sixes off Griffith’s off-spin, but no other batsman could lend any back-up to Ifill as the visitors struggled to 104-9 when their 20 overs expired. National swing bowler Paul Wintz (2-16), left-arm seamer Andre Stoll (2-14) and Griffith (2-21)
did the damage for DCC.
National under-19 skipper Brian Sattaur (14) was removed by France at 18-1 but Griffith, who played some flowing drives and Boodie, the only batsman to register a double century at the inter-county 50-over competition, took the score to 60 before pacer Garfield DeRoach sent back Griffith who hit a four and a six in his cameo.
Boodie who faced just 18 balls and reached the boundary three time and pulled DeRoach for a dismissive six, was trapped LBW to Abdool Rahim as DCC slipped to 87-3 but Barnwell and Demerara under-19 left-hander Sherfane Rutherford (13 with a six and a four) played some attractive shots before Rutherford was LBW at 140-4.
Barnwell continued to hit the ball to all parts of the field as he played in commanding fashion and dominated the partnership with Kemol Savory (11) before the left-handed DCC Keeper top edged one from Hamilton and was taken at short third man to leave the score on 169-5.
When GYO began their run chase Stoll plucked out the first two wickets to leave the score on 12-2 before Ifill who played several audacious shots, including a stunning square cut to bring up his fifty, provided the only resistance from GYO.
The other game scheduled for yesterday between hosts Malteenoes and GNIC was washed out without a ball being bowled.
