Man jailed in absentia for wounding money changer
Magistrate Fabayo Azore on Tuesday sentenced a man to 12 months imprisonment in his absence, after he was found guilty of unlawfully and maliciously wounding a money changer.
Al Beckles was found guilty of unlawfully and maliciously wounding Orin Braithwaite, with the intent to maim, disable or disfigure, on April 23, 2013, at D’Urban Street.
In Beckles’ absence, the Magistrate informed his Attorney Peter Hugh of her decision. Hugh, in response told the Magistrate that his client was in neighbouring Brazil visiting his sick son.
The 63-year-old money changer who was stabbed several times about the body had told this publication that his attacker had met with him the day prior to the incident, and had “fooled” him into walking with $1.6M in exchange for US $8,000.
On the day of the incident, Braithwaite was in Beckles’ car heading to D’Urban Street to carry out the transaction, when he was attacked with a knife.
Braithwaite suffered several injuries as a result of the brutal attack.
He was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation after the incident and explained to the court yesterday that he never expected that he would have been conned, especially by someone who had done business with him before.
