Executive Member of the Justice For All Party (JFAP), Jaipaul Sharma, is now “mentally” prepared to face his nemesis, Education Minister, Priya Manickchand.
Last year, Manickchand hurled some “offensive” remarks at Sharma, in relation to his father being before the court on rape allegations. House Speaker, Raphael Trotman had stated when the incident occurred that she was out of order and threatened that he would not recognize during her budget presentation.
But her words had hurt Sharma so much that he made the decision to resign as a Member of Parliament. He had even pulled out of APNU. But since elections are around the corner, he recently rejoined the Partnership and seems ready to face the pressures of the elections.
Asked at a press conference yesterday if he is mentally prepared now to face the Minister, should she behave in a similar manner, Sharma stated that he can manage it.
“I resigned but I didn’t leave politics. The day I resigned I commenced a campaign and began speaking out against the atrocities of the PPP/C against the poor. Most of the atrocities that are committed in this country are committed against the poor women and children.
“What Priya was talking about was on the platform of protecting women and children. Only recently, a senior PPP official’s son was allegedly charged for raping an under aged girl. But rape is not my thing so it is not a big issue for me…If they going to look at me and point back fingers I can point back too. I think I am ok with that in that regard and if they want to put Priya on me I can manage …” he concluded.
He said, too, that his main reason for rejoining APNU is to see the back of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic. Sharma is of the firm belief that the coalition can truly ensure a good life for all Guyanese and would ensure that widespread corruption is brought to a halt. (Kiana Wilburg)
